Aion: The Tower of Eternity is an MMORPG, or a massively-multiplayer online role playing game, which was released in Australia, China, Europe, Korea, and North America. It was developed by a Korean game developing firm named NCsoft for the fantasy game MMORPG market.
One of Aion’s significant features is the player’s ability to fly, which figures highly in the game’s combat mechanics. This feature separates Aion from other similar games which only offer ground-based combat, with flight distinctly as a means of travelling from location to location.
Introduction to Aion: the Story
Aion, the game’s namesake, was a benevolent yet powerful deity who protected the inhabitants and creatures of the Atreia, the world he created. Aion also gave rise to the creation of humans, as well as their guardians, a race of demigods called the Draken. The Draken were also gifted with some of the powers and abilities of Aion, and later became corrupt, due to the awesome powers that they possessed. They eventually veered away from why they were created, and proceeded to subjugate the humans whom they were intended to protect.
The Dragon Lords
Death and destruction awaited all creatures who would not submit to their biding, and chaos prevailed over the land. They evolved, their powers becoming more and more uncontrollable, and their evil even more so. A new species sprung from the Draken, with capabilities far beyond any of the already formidable species. They were called the Balaur, the best of which named themselves the Dragon Lords. These five Lords wished for exponential power to rival Aion’s, and when they were refused this, revolted and warred against their creator.
The Empyrean Lords
His hand forced by this contingency, Aion then made twelve powerful beings, the Empyrean Lords, who were divine creatures of unassailable power, as sentries of the center of Atreia, the titular Tower of Eternity. This location was the fount of Aion’s energy, released into the world as Aether. The Empyrean Lords then proceeded to develop a bastion of safe haven in lands surrounding the tower, where humans thrived and rebuilt their civilization.
The Aether
The Aether was a source of power for all who could harness it, and some of the humans were skilled and privileged enough to do so. The Daeva, one of the groups of humans, had the ability to fly and guard against the sinister Balaur. Empyrean Lords led the Daeva into the Millennium War, a battle which lasted for hundreds of years. An Empyrean Lord named Israphel, along with others named Ariel and Siel, eventually tired of the violence and wanted the respite of peace. Azphel, along with the other Empyrean Lords, would have none of it, saying that this development would be foolish, as well as disrespectful to those who had given up their own lives in the centuries-long war. However, they all agreed to consider a conference with the Dragon Lords.
The Seraphim and Shedim Lords
Before talks were able to proceed inside the haven, Azphel, in his rage, attacked one Dragon Lord. This led to the Balaur charging the Tower of Eternity. Once again, violence reigned, and to stem the tide, Israphel and Siel forfeited their souls to encapsulate the Aether to allow it to dissipate would shatter the planet. The ten surviving Empyrean Lords made two factions after that: ones who became the belligerent Shedim Lords, and those who opposed them, the Seraphim Lords.
The Daeva who followed the Seraphim Lords and inhabited the part of the world bathed in light and beauty were called the Elyos, ethereal beings who inhabited the Sanctum. Those who lived in the part of the world left in shadow became monstrous, as they had to fight against the denizens of that world. They were called the Asmodians, who skulked in Pandaemonium with the Shedim Lords.
The Inhabitants of Aion: Character Classes
The eight special character classes are rooted in four basic classes of the game. The basic classes, what players start with, are Mage, Priest, Scout, and Warrior. Once a player attains Level 10, he or she may select more specific character class linked to that basic class. This process allows beginners to familiarize themselves with the dynamics of the game, before having to make the important choice of what special class to commit to. Class skills are different for the various classes and sub-classes.
The Mage
Mages are magicians who have the ability to launch devastating attacks through their otherworldly powers. They mainly deal damage through magic, as their physical abilities for combat are weak. A Mage can choose to become a Spiritmaster or Sorcerer. Sorcerers control the wind, fire, water, and earth elements, and use these for remote damage spells. Spiritmasters, as the name denotes, harness the power of earth, water, wind, and fire elements, and summon these to do their bidding.
The Priest
Priests are also warriors, albeit ones who get their powers from the spirits around them. These powers include spells for protection and healing, which makes them competent adversaries in melees and other physical encounters. Priests are good combatants and able supporting characters, which are vital to any party. A Priest can turn into a Chanter or a Cleric. The Chanter can conjure damage spells and healing spells, fortifying his or her magic through special mantras. He mostly serves to heal characters in the party and enhance their abilities. The Cleric is the group’s primary healer, who takes the powers of the Chanter to a higher level with the power to raise dead allies. He or she therefore has great defensive ability.
The Scout, although not the most powerful member of the group, is highly agile and able to attack swiftly. The Scout can choose from the Assassin and Ranger sub-classes. Assassins are meant for stealth attacks, combining lethal skills with the already remarkable agility of its base class. The Ranger, Aion’s only physically-ranged damage character, has various methods of remote attack and some hand-to-hand combat capabilities.
The Warrior
The Warrior is and expert in combat at close-quarters, and thrives in most combat situations. The Warrior can evolve into a Templar or Gladiator. Templars incorporate defensive techniques such as magical chants into their abilities, while Gladiators have various melee weapons and other accessories at their disposal.
Character Evolution
Character customization within Aion is surprisingly in-depth, even with only 8 special classes for the player to choose from. Aside from customizing aesthetics such as character features, armor and weapon appearance can also be changed, without having to sacrifice statistics an item possesses. The Skill Chain feature, which a player learns as he or she progresses through the game, are also involving as one skill chain is used, it unlocks another, and another, and so on.
