EverQuest II (EQ2) is a popular multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) based on the very successful EverQuest. EQII, however, is not a direct sequel to EQ, its been called a “parallel universe” to the original, taking place in an alternate future to the original game’s setting
EverQuest 2 takes place in the fantasy world of Norrath five hundred years after the original EverQuest. Mortal invasions on their lands have enraged the gods, and in retaliation leave the world. Orcs and Dark Elves who have destroyed almost all of Faydwer now occupy Norrath. At the same time, Antonica (part of the bastion of the Kingdom of Qeynos) has been destroyed by the Goblins, Orges, and Giants. Antonica has been ripped into smaller islands, now called the Shattered Lands. Communication between Antonica and Norrath are now hindered due to the fact that the seas between them are impassable.
EverQuest 2 takes place during the Age of Destiny.. During this age, Queen Antonia Bayle of Qeynos is compassionate sorceress who embraces all of the good races and refugees into her city in order to begin the rebuilding of Norrath. Qeynos is filled with good people who are hopeful and are looking forward to piecing the fallen land together. On the other side of the coin, Lucan D’Lere, The Overlord of Freeport, is the ruler of the evil races and strives for conquest. Freeport could be seen as the exact opposite of Qeynos, filled with mistrusting evil races, with everyone looking out for him or herself. You pretty much have to pick between the two states and whichever you pick will affect your experience of the game. This will be one of the first decisions you have to make in the game, and it’s the most important. Both cities are exactly the same in terms of what they offer; all that is different is the people in the land and the visual tone. One land is good while the other is evil, you can pretty much figure out how it’ll look.
As I mentioned before, a lot has changed since EverQuest but the vets will be comfortable in this new territory. Racial class restrictions are no more, your race will be dictated by the racial bonuses you have available and by your initial ability scores. Since the race you pick really doesn’t matter until you get into the latter levels, you’ll probably just pick your race based on their appearance. You are able to fully customize their appearance, making them look however you want, but when you get in the game they all look pretty much the same so don’t waste your time altering their appearance.
Many of the new features of EverQuest 2 make it a very strong game, but one that will still be very familiar to players of the original EverQuest. There aren’t as many new features as you would think but all the games previous strengths have been solidified and its weaknesses have been altered for the better. All in all, EQ2 is a very fun game, and if you’re into MMORPG then it’s the game for you. Overall, it’s gotten very good reviews, you can download a trial version of the game from their website. EverQuest II also offers the players the ability to make actual money by selling EverQuest 2 Gold or EQII Plat to other players for money.
