Guild Wars is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, produced by ArenaNet. The game is strongly guild based, which is quite apparent considering the name. Guilds are simply groups that you do activities with. The activities could be questing, adventuring, or just hanging out and talking.
There are two main different forms of play in Guild Wars. These types are a normal co-operative role playing component, and a Player vs. Player type, which is often called PVP. The cooperative game mode is generally done with your guild, and generally consists of completing quests together, going exploring, etc.
Guild Wars is a pretty typical MMORPG. When you first start out, you will begin with a blank slate. From that, you create your avatar, which becomes your character. You can customize many things, including race, sex, looks, etc. Choose carefully at this point, as you won’t be able to change the looks of your character, except through wearing new clothes and armor.
GW has been praised by many because of the fact that you can play it online without paying a monthly subscription fee. Most popular MMO’s have hefty monthly fees, which they use to pay the monthly server bills, as well as fund future patches and moderation. No body knows quite how ArenaNet can afford to host such a great game for free, but the important thing is that they do it somehow.
Guild Wars has a fully 3D environment, and has award-wining graphics. It is a normal 3rd person view, so you are looking down on your character from above. There is a 1st person view available, but personally, I think it is very hard to play this way, so I would suggest sticking to 3rd person.
A great feature of GW is that you can get a max-leveled character, with all the best equipment, without doing any work! When you start a character, you are given two choices: start from 0, and work your way up just like in a normal RPG, or, start from max level, with all the best weapons and armor, and use your character for the PVP feature. This makes Guild Wars fun for all people. Many people enjoy the process of leveling up and unlocking new things, while many hate it and would rather skip it all and just get to the fun stuff. This feature alone makes Guild Wars one of my favorite games of all time.
The main currency used in the game is Guild Wars Gold. GW Gold is used to fund every in-game transaction, and that is all it was ever meant for. However, as can be seen in many MMO’s, you will see real world trading taking place in Guild Wars. That means that people are selling their in-game money (GW Gold) for real cash.
