Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is a fantasy based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, or MMORPG. Developed by Sigil Games, and Sony Online Entertainment, the game was expected to be a huge success. However, it was released before it was fully prepared, and only sold about 240,000 copies, far less than expected. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, or Vanguard: SoH for short, is similar to many other MMORPG’s in the way it is run. You must purchase the original game, and then purchase a subscription in order to play online. For this reason, the initial 240,000 copies that were sold resulted in only 130,000 subscribers. This figure slowly dropped, dipping down to around 40,000 active subscribers. This was a huge disappointment for the developers, as well as fans of the game.
With the drastic drop in subscribers, as well as feedback from the users, the developers started working on patches to improve the game. They released the “game update 6” in October 2008, in the hopes of attracting new users. The member base has gone up, and the game is far less flawed than it was when originally released. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is now considered to be a great game, and the loyal member base is still rising. With games like World of Warcraft dominating the MMORPG market, it is hard for smaller games like Vanguard: SoH to survive, but hopefully the resent patch will change that.
The game, like many other MMO’s, offers character customization. When you create your character, or avatar, you will choose the avatar’s name, gender, race, and adventuring class. There are 19 races to choose from, and each has a definitive look. Choose carefully when choosing your race, as each different species has unique abilities that are unlocked throughout the game. Once you have customized your character, you can begin playing. The characters you use will level up and gain levels, gold, and experience throughout your gaming experience. Higher leveled characters are much more powerful than low levels or new characters, and usually dominate most of the game. If at any time you become bored of your first character, you can always create more! Users can have up to 12 characters per account.
There are 3 main “spheres” in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. The 3 things are Adventuring, Crafting, and Diplomacy. However, most of Vanguard: SoH consists of Adventuring. Adventuring is the just another name for questing, which is the essence of most MMORPG’s. The way you adventure is highly dependent on the race and Adventuring class you choose at the beginning of the game. There are 15 classes to choose from, that are usually placed into 4 different categories. The four different categories are protective fighter, offensive fighter, defensive spell caster, and offensive spell caster. Protective fighters are considered the “tank” class. These fighters wear heavy armor, and are used for defensive closed-range fighting. Offensive fighters wear armor, but nothing heavy enough to restrict their movement. These fighters are used for aggressive combat, and most classes have multiple weapons, allowing them to fight from close or long range. This class is considered the most versatile, and is a good class to choose if you are not sure what you want. The next class, defensive spell caster, is considered the healing class. Characters in this class will help their fellow gamers more than themselves, through healing and other support. The final category, offensive spell caster, combines healing powers, as well as powerful combat abilities. They wear light armor, and can teleport themselves out of trouble if necessary.
All classes are very fun to play, and keep in mind that you can have up to 12 characters on one account, so you could try almost all of the adventuring classes. The main thing you should consider when choosing your class is, what style of game play do you most enjoy? Do you like brute force and aggressive combat? Or do you prefer to be the peaceful, yet dangerous healer? Is magic your thing? Class choice is very important. If you choose wrong, you will become bored of your character very fast, and you will have to start over on a new character. While starting over is fun for some, most people don’t want to lose all the work they put into their character. As you can see, classes are designed to allow teamwork. A group of all one class is weak, but a healthy mix of all classes is virtually unstoppable.
The second sphere of Vanguard: SoH is Crafting. Crafting is essentially just what the name implies; creating products out of raw materials. When you craft, you create useful items either for your own personal use, or for trade. Crafting, while not exiting, is completely necessary to the game. Crafters pump products into the market for others to purchase, and this keeps the economy flowing. Yes, I did say economy. Even video games have real economies nowadays, and they fluctuate and change just as a normal, real-world economy would.
The third sphere is Diplomacy. Diplomacy is truly unique to Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. It is basically an in-game card game, inspired by collectable card games. Diplomats may unlock special items that are necessary in finishing the game.
I mentioned earlier that Vanguard has an economy of its own. As with many MMO’s, the developers of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes have had problems with real world trading. Real world trading is the process of selling Vanguard gold for real money. While this game is not as popular as other MMO’s, there is still a large amount of Vanguard gold being sold.
